Casino Community Impacts

The Indiana casinos continue to provide strong tax revenues to support projects throughout the state. From the wagering tax alone, over $1.2 billion to date has gone into the Build Indiana Fund to support road and bridge upgrades, as well as other much-needed infrastructure improvements and worthy community projects. All 92 counties reap the benefits of casino gaming revenue via the Build Indiana Fund.

The over $1.5 billion to date generated in supplemental (admission) tax also has benefited communities and the state. Casino host communities’ development agreements add another layer of economic benefit to the picture. Finally, the Indiana economy, and Hoosier families, benefit from the over 13,000 jobs the industry has created with annual wages and benefits totaling more than $500 million.

Indiana’s casinos are the fifth largest employer in Indiana.

Mayor Tom DeBaun, City of Shelbyville

“The presence of Horseshoe Indianapolis has been of great benefit to our community. The leadership team gives of their time and talents by their service on various boards and committees. They are also a dependable supporter of our local not-for-profit agencies and their financial contributions have enabled the community to enact numerous programs that benefit citizens across the spectrum.”

Mayor Jerome A. Prince, City of Gary

“The Hard Rock Casino-Northern Indiana is more than a great place to enjoy some entertainment and good food and add to the local economy. It does all of those things, but it represents a major step in moving Gary towards becoming a true destination city. It represents a commitment by a well-known and well-established name brand, Hard Rock Casino, to making our historic city an important part of the Hard Rock story, and it shows how we all can Re-Imagine Gary and what we can do with our own future.”

Mayor Thomas Broderick, Jr., City of Anderson

“Harrah’s Hoosier Park is a great community partner that provides quality entertainment, financial resources, support for our non-profits, good paying jobs, and attraction of tourism to our community. We are proud Harrah’s Hoosier Park Racing & Casino calls Anderson its home.”

Mayor Steve Slack, City of Rising Sun

“In 1995, The City of Rising Sun was extremely fortunate to have been chosen to receive a gaming license and be named the future home of a Riverboat Casino. Rising Sun, Ohio County and the surrounding areas were economically depressed, and the Indiana Gaming Commission was insightful enough to see a road to bigger and better things in Southeast Indiana. Rising Sun’s leaders devised a plan to help the economic flow in not only one small town but the entire Southeast region.

“That plan, over the last 25 years, has seen an estimated $30 million dollars shared with Rising Sun’s neighbors along with jobs, lower unemployment rates, new infrastructure, street and riverfront enhancements, improved education, and stable tax rates to name just a few. The whole region is more economically sound due to the positive thoughts and ideas coming from our local leaders and just, very honestly, thinking WAY outside the box.

“Rising Sun powers that be continue to utilize gaming dollars in the best way possible to plan for the future and enhance the quality of life in Rising Sun and the Southeast region.”

State Representative Karen Engleman, House District 70

“Caesars Southern Indiana has provided a large source of revenue and entertainment for both Hoosiers and out-of-state visitors. They have been a great partner to Harrison County, it’s surrounding counties and the State of Indiana.

“Revenue coming from the casino has enabled our local governments to fund projects that have promoted economic development.

“Donations from Caesars Southern Indiana formed both the Harrison County Community Foundation and the Caesars Foundation of Floyd County. Both foundations have funded many scholarships and assisted many community organizations to promote positive and sustainable growth in our area.

“We have truly benefitted from their generosity.”
